The biological industry is one of the three major sunrise industries in the 21st century. China has relatively large gap behind the developed countries in terms of industrialization of biotechnology products, mainly due to the insufficient researchers in biological engineering. There is huge demand of talents with biological engineering background. Therefore our graduates will have broad job opportunities. The graduates can continue their study in master and PhD degrees, as well as find jobs in biochemical engineering, environmental chemical engineering, etc.

1.Faculty and Research

The department of biomolecular and chemical engineering was established in 2012. Currently it has six full-time faculties, and one adjunct professor and one overseas adjunct PhD supervisor. The faculty includes one Cheung Kong professor, three professors, and two associate professors. All staff have oversea working experience. Over 30 grants were granted during the past 5 years. More than 100 papers were published in the journal including Nat. Chem., ACS Nano, J. Am. Chem. Soc., Adv. Funct. Mater., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., etc. 28 patents were authorized. 20 postgraduates were trained. More than 15 PhD students were sent to UK, Denmark, USA, and Australia for academic training.

Xiaojun Han: professor, head of the department, New Century Excellent Talents. He is the principal investigator of 20 grants including 4 from National Natural Science Foundation of China. So far, he has published more than 100 papers in international journals including Adv. Mater., ACS Nano, J. Am. Chem. Soc., Adv. Funct. Mater., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. etc., 4 book chapters, and 1 book. He also has 28 patents.

Dafa Chen: professor, deputy director of the department. He is the principal investigator of 6 grants. So far, he has published more than 20 papers in international journals including Nat. Chem., J. Am. Chem. Soc. and Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. The paper published in Nat. Chem. in 2015 was highlighted in the website of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

2.Main courses

The department has a biochemical engineering undergraduate module, aiming to train the students in the fields of biological and chemical engineering. Main courses include inorganic chemistry Ⅱ, organic chemistry Ⅱ (A), organic chemical Ⅱ (B), physical chemistry Ⅱ (A), physical chemistry, Ⅱ (B), analytical chemistry, chemical reaction engineering, chemical engineering design, biochemistry, cell engineering, industrial microbiology and molecular biology.
